What Are Genital Warts?
Genital warts are painless lumps caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection in both men and women. These growths are typically cauliflower-like in appearance and vary in size. HPV infection is a sexually transmitted infection and its prevalence is increasing in our country.

HPV Infection and Transmission Routes
HPV is a highly contagious virus, and lesions in the genital area can be transmitted even through brief contact. HPV is most commonly spread through sexual intercourse. The mucous membranes in the genital area make it easier for the virus to transmit from male to female.

Symptoms of Genital Warts
The symptoms of HPV infection can vary between individuals. In men, the infection may not show any symptoms, while in women, small lesions may be detectable through magnification. Larger cauliflower-like growths may also occur in the vaginal or anal area.

Importance of HPV Infection in Women
In women, HPV infection can be detected through a Pap smear test during gynecological examinations. Some types of HPV are linked to cancer development, making the treatment of HPV infections crucial.

HPV Infection and Pregnancy
During pregnancy, large warts caused by HPV infection may block the birth canal, making vaginal delivery impossible. Additionally, the virus may be transmitted to the baby during birth, leading to papillomas in the baby's larynx.

HPV Treatment and Prevention Methods
The treatment for HPV focuses on removing visible lesions, but it does not eliminate the virus from the body. For protection, condom use during sexual intercourse is important, although it may not fully prevent transmission due to HPV's high contagiousness. Avoiding contact with individuals who have visible genital warts is the most effective prevention method.
